Poole Harbour Trails is a group of volunteers aiming to describe and improve the walking and cycling routes around Poole Harbour.
They have waymarked a walking trail right around the harbour, and are currently clearing the Cordite Way, a new path that the group achieved right of way status on.
Poole Harbour Trails exists to support and improve walking and cycling routes around Poole Harbour, working with landowners, the Councils and individuals. They have succeeded in waymarking a series of walking trails, creating booklets to guide people around, and getting the route on the Ordnance Survey map.
How the group started
They were founded by two Dorset walkers researching new routes for the Ramblers. With the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in 2001, access to the countryside was severely restricted. Looking for something to keep them busy during this time, they had the idea of investigating whether it was possible to walk around Poole Harbour, keeping close to the shoreline. They explored a possible route and although they could see there were some potential problems, decided to pursue the idea. They consulted local groups and organisations and discovered that there was a lot of interest in such a project and the Poole Harbour Trails group was born.
